How to Unplug and Do a Digital Detox
We’ve all been looking at screens a lot lately. Whether it’s a video call or a text conversation, sometimes we just need to get away from our phones and computer screens. It’s time for a digital detox, not just to cut down on screen time, but to promote good health as well. Whether you’re trying to improve your home habits, get rid of negative influences from social media, or just cutting down on blue light exposure, here are a few ways you can do a digital detox.
Take a break from social media.
A huge reason why we look at our screens so much is to stay plugged in. But we don’t always need to know what’s going on with everyone else 24/7. Do what you can to take a break from or limit your time on social media throughout the week. This will help you fill the day with more productive things.
“Unfollow” and block out stress.
While it’s important to stay connected to people, it’s also important to get rid of anything that brings you down mentally and emotionally. Find the accounts or hashtags that do just that and unfollow them.
Break the habit of checking your phone before you sleep.
The emails and texts can wait. Blue light exposure at night can make it harder for you to wind down and relax. Help yourself sleep better and make it easier to get up in the morning by not using your phone within an hour of going to sleep.
Read and write on paper.
While e-readers are great, sometimes you can’t beat the feel of a book in your hand. Find your home nook and pick up a book to rejuvenate your mind. Another option is to start a daily journal. If you have no idea what to write about, try focusing on things you’ve been grateful for throughout the day.
Get outside during your free time.
While it’s tempting to binge-watch your favorite shows, try to spend some time outside instead. Go for a walk or run around the neighborhood. Go for a bike ride on a nearby trail. You can also try gardening (this could be indoors too)! Your TV doesn’t have to be your only option.
Have tech-free meals.
Make it a new habit for the whole family to put the phones and laptops away when it’s mealtime. This will help you enjoy your meal and/or the conversations with your household.
Keep your eyes healthy.
For those times you have to be looking at a screen, there are a few ways you can take care of your eyes. Try glasses that block blue light or a screen protector that is designed to block blue light. You can also take a supplement like CarotoMax® to add key nutrients to your diet that help protect your eyes.*
When there are plenty of opportunities to be on your phone or computer, there are also plenty of things you can do instead. Try a digital detox this week and see how you feel afterward!
